The municipality of Sant Joan de Labritja is a living breathing showcase of the culture and traditions of Ibiza. Each individual town in the borough is small enough to maintain the true essence of the island’s rural character, with roots deep in culture and folklore. The special attention paid to the preservation of the environment itself, the cultivation of fields, the promotion of a set of cultural values and the care and conservation of the boroughs’ heritage and traditional Ibicencan architecture gives one the overall impression that here is a place whose people are proud of what it is and love what it has got. Its unique attractions, scattered across the borough, conserve and honour its history, and give visitors the chance to dance around the wells and fountains at celebrations including the Saints Days Festivals and other Catholic Feast days. The Holy Thursday Processions at Easter, or the Seafood Feast in honour of the Virgin del Carmen are two particularly celebrated feast days. As testament to the high regard in which the people of Sant Joan hold their heritage, one only has to look around at the wealth of well-preserved monuments, churches, wells and natural water springs, as well as country houses and defence towers. The folklore of the area is one of its key strengths and for that reason, the typical ‘ball pages’ or country dancing has the power to transport any onlooker back through time. As far as culinary specialties go, the stomach won’t be much happier than when in Sant Joan. From the typical ‘matanzas’- a family gathering with its main focus on the slaughtering of a pig, to the homemade wine and bread, and the traditional sweets- ‘salsa de Navidad’-the sweet, thick almond Christmas sauce, ‘flaó’ or ‘orelletes’ –this is the uphold of a traditional and cultural legacy; it is authentic country cuisine at its best. Through these pages, visitors can get to know the real Sant Joan de Labritja, and learn about its people, its traditions, culture and folklore, all of which we are extremely proud of. |
