Ovens and kilns

Lime kilns.

This particular type of oven has been associated with Ibicencan architecture for many centuries; though their use was somewhat abandoned in the middle of the 19th century. Remnants are in evidence across the municipality.

The creation of the limekilns was a lengthy process, with their makers spending time in the search for the perfect conditions, namely an appropriate isolated woodland spot and the construction method employed. The gathering of fuel for the fire was obviously also of some importance.

Once prepared, the furnace relied on the living stone from which it was cut to heat the oven, which, when finally lit, had to endure the slow process of turning the stones white-hot.

Coal Fires

The coal furnace operated in a similar way to the limekiln, with coal an abundant raw material. However, whilst the process of making the charcoal took some 24 hours, locals made the most of the preparation time by throwing parties and dances.
