Sant Llorenç de Balàfia
Print E-mail

The final town in the municipality and the only one with no coastline, San Lorenzo is located in the central zone of the island. The village itself has no inhabitants to speak of, with all 1232 people on the census living outside the village nucleus, which houses only the Church and a very small number of public and commercial buildings.

In the village itself there are a number of buildings with typical characteristics of the architecture of the Pitiusas, with towers of Arabian origin, and are considered to be of high architectural importance. These towers were constructed by the farming families who lived nearly and were used as defence towers at the time when the island was under attack from the Turks. The patron saint festivities of Sant Llorenç de Balàfia is held on 10th August, a day which many of the older residents say is always the warmest day of the year.

The churches of the municipality are well worth a visit. Apart from their obvious beauty with their thick stone whitewashed walls, courtyards and adjoining cemeteries, the churches of Sant Joan are completely distinctive from any on the Spanish mainland. Particularly of interest is that of Sant Miguel de Balanzat, which according to studies by experts, would appear to be the oldest in Ibiza.
