The Portinatx Tower
Print E-mail

With a very similar appearance to the Torre des Molar or that of Balansat, it is no surprise to learn that the ‘Torre de Portinatx’ was constructed at the same time. Built with a similar objective in mind- to protect and control the northern coast of the island, it was officially declared open on 26th October 1763. Although it received its allocation of artillery, its role was principally as an observational point; a watchtower manned by two individuals.

It was designed by Ballester, chief engineer of the kingdom of Mallorca, in the mid-18th century. He was also the man behind the towers of Cabeza de Berberia (Formentera), Puig des Savinar and the Balansat Harbour.

It can be reached by taking the road that exits from s’Arenal Pequeño de Portinatx (the smaller of the Portinatx beaches), and following the road for approximately 1km. As an extra indication, the tower is situated near a number of tourist buildings.
