Balàfia A set of typical houses Ibiza with interior defence towers, of great aesthetic beauty and architectural interest. Located a few metres from the town of Sant Llorenç, Balàfia can be reached on foot. It consists of a group of five country houses and two defence towers, and altogether form a small nucleus of great archaeological interest. All homes are privately owned. These towers served as a refuge for the inhabitants of these houses in the case of pirate attacks, and their function is similar to the coastal defence Towers, although with different characteristics. The white crosses painted on the facade of the towers serve to protect against negative influences.
The Fountain of Balàfia Wells and fountains are beautiful characteristics of our architecture. During summer typical dances called “Ballades” are performed around the wells and springs to celebrate the harvest and give thanks for the water itself. The tradition of the ballade was rejuvenated some years ago by the local ‘ball pagès’ dancers and everyone is invited to participate.
The Well of Aubarqueta The ‘Pou’ or Well d'Aubarqueta in Sant Miquel, is one of the few on the island known as an “abeurada”,meaning that its water is safe and ready to drink straight from the depths of the well. Used down through the years by the locals as a fine source of drinking water.
The Defence Tower of des Molar. Forms part of the coastal defence network constructed to complement the city walls of Ibiza, and which were officially completed on 26 October,1763. Although built as the principal defence point of the north of the island, it was never actually furnished with an artillery supply, but was however manned by two guards who used it as an observation point. Getting There: Take the road which leads to Na Xamena from the Port of San Miguel. After 1km turn right and follow the asphalt road.
The Defence Tower of Portinatx Eighteenth Century Very similar characteristics to the Des Molar Tower, dating from the same period, its aim was also to keep watch on the northern coast of the island, especially its steep cliffs. No artillery was kept in the tower; its role was primarily an observational one and was manned by two guards. It is located right next to Portinatx.
Getting there: Take the road to Arenal Petit (Portinatx) and after a trek of about one mile you’ll reach the tower, which is surrounded by some tourist buildings.
