The churches that exist in and around the municipality of Sant Joan often prove a delight to the tourist visitor, due to their location, their apparent harmony within their environment, their light and their unique architecture.

First built in the 14th century A.D, their main function, apart from the obvious place of Holy Worship, was as a defence point against invading pirates. It is for this reason that the church buildings resemble fortifications; a clear example of this is the Church of Sant Miquel, which is built on top of a hill.

The churches were also seen as an ideal meeting place for the inhabitants of the parish, and for this reason, large porches and an open square were built at their entrance. These buildings were the nucleus of every parish with the towns erected around them. The social life of each village still for the main part centres round the church, most especially on their special feast days.
